It's 1944 in middle America. When charming Elwood P. Dowd introduces his six foot imaginary friend - a rabbit named Harvey- to guests at a social party, his sister Veta has seen about as much of his eccentric behavior as she can stand. She decides to have him committed to an insane asylum to spare their family embarrassment. But hilarity ensues when her hysterical account of the situation gets her accidentally admitted instead. The overly eager orderly and self-inflated doctor perpetuate the mistaken identity while Harvey's mischevious and mysterious presence seems to bring romance, delight, and humorous adventures wherever he appears.
